The majority of Giselle's personality can be summed up in two simple words: "Disney princess." At first, that's the stereotype that most people see, and to a certain extent it defines her pretty well. Very recently, however, a deluge of new experiences have introduced her to facets of life she didn't even know existed before, and despite some growing pains, she's in the process of learning and maturing into a more well-rounded person.

Giselle grew up and lived for most of her life in Andalasia, a fairy tale world where she never had to experience unpleasant emotions such as doubt, frustration, or anger. She lived in a cottage in the forest, and though she had no family, a simple tune sung out her window would summon dozens of animal friends who adored her and kept her from ever being lonely. Her life at that point basically revolved around waiting for her true love to come find her--something that she simply knew would happen, because that's just the way life worked in Andalasia. When it did happen, and Edward spirited her off to be married, she instinctively knew the words of his love song. They didn't even have to get to know each other, because they just knew that they were meant to be together. Life was neat and tidy, and her happy-ever-after seemed assured.

The complication came in when she was removed from Andalasia and thrown into a place where "there are no happy endings": Earth, specifically New York City. In a few short hours she was yelled at, robbed, rained on, and utterly, hopelessly lost. She had finally gotten her first taste of the darker, more complicated side of life, even if she didn't exactly understand it all at first.

Coming from a place like Andalasia, Giselle has very little experience with things like anger. She has been really angry only once, at Robert, and even in the midst of her anger she experienced a little thrill at recognizing the new emotion. She still takes a moment to recognize jokes, and sarcasm is still a bit over her head sometimes (but she's learning!). Learning that some couples don't stay together forever, and hearing Robert's insistence that most couples aren't even happy together, horrified her.

Right now the most consuming of these new emotions is doubt. True love has always been her one and only goal, and at the moment she's not entirely sure who her true love is. The fact that she didn't burst out singing when Edward found her is very telling--though only a day or so before she'd been singing her heart out for Robert, her reunion with Edward didn't inspire a single note. She has not yet come to the realization that she's in love with Robert, though, and she's still planning to go through with marrying Edward, even if he heart isn't really in it anymore. As proof that New York life is creeping up on her, she even asked Edward to go on a date with her (she'd only learned about the concept of dates from Robert shortly before Edward's arrival). She's no longer willing to blindly leap into her marriage, and what does that mean for her future?

This doubt has caused her to be a bit melancholy lately--she's not quite as free with her smiles, not so blissfully carefree as before. These new emotions don't come easily for Giselle, but she's coping as best she can. More importantly, she's thinking more than she ever has in her life--witness Edward's complete confusion when she told him she was thinking. Life isn't just a song and dance anymore, it's a lot more complicated than she ever believed was possible.

Even now, having been exposed to a place where so many people are unhappy and so many bad things happen, and despite her more melancholy turn, she still retains her innocence and overall optimism. Giselle is a very glass-half-full person, and her sunny demeanor often rubs off on those around her. And yes, being a Disney princess means having full license to not only break out into song whenever you feel like it, but also to inspire even jaded New Yorkers to join you in a full musical number. That's a good word for her: inspiring. She has inspired a couple in the midst of a bitter divorce to get back together after only spending a few minutes in their presence, so strong is her belief in the power of love.

At her core is a streak of heroism--though she has not reached this point yet in her canon, we see at the end of Enchanted that she is capable of taking up arms and fighting to save those she loves. She is not afraid to stand up for what's right and being kind-hearted doesn't make her a complete pacifist.

When she's not debating her love life or fighting dragons, Giselle loves to sing and dance and she has a great eye for fashion. Not only is her taste impeccable, she can take just about any kind of material and whip out a perfectly stitched dress in no time flat (curtains of Asgard, beware). She's fascinated with learning new things and trying new foods (best part of New York, aside from that whole Robert-and-Morgan thing). She's also a social butterfly who can get along with just about anyone, from kids to old people, romantics to cynics. Animals will always hold a special place in her heart, even if she can't speak to them or summon them with a song.
